 First Entourage

Of all the members of the wedding party, the flower girl is arguably the cutest of the bunch, and probably the youngest. Traditionally, flower girls were required to be young virgins between the ages of 4 and 8.

The male counterpart of the lovely flower girl is the page boy or the ring bearer. Most of the time, the flower girl and her equally young escort are made to resemble an actual couple, just as in the case of the maid of honor and the best man.

Depending on how formal the ceremony is, along with the preference of the bride and her groom, there can be more than one flower girl in the wedding procession. In highly formal and society weddings, it’s not uncommon to have at least two flower girls as part of the procession.

Choosing the Flower Girl

Flower girls, along with page boys and ring bearers are often nephews, nieces or younger siblings of either the bride or the groom. In some instances, children of friends are picked as part of the wedding procession.

Responsibilities of the Flower Girl

Flowering the Wedding
It’s important for the flower girl to know her responsibilities well. The young girl will be asked to walk in front of the bride and either

  • sprinkle flower petals from the basket she’s carrying,
  • simply carry a bouquet of flowers as she walks down the aisle; or
  • carry thornless roses along with her bouquet, handing them out to the guests as she makes her way down the aisle.

Wedding Attire

Traditionally, flower girls wore the same dress design and color as the bride’s wedding gown. These days, however, more and more modern brides opt to dress their small-sized representatives in more child-appropriate garb consisting of ribbons, ball gown skirts and layers of tulle

In most cultures, it is the responsibility of the child’s parents to provide the flower girl’s dress. There are some brides, however, who are more than willing to choose and pay for the little girl’s dress and accessories.

My best friend's young daughters are twins, and we chose them asd our flower girls for our wedding which was held last month. They were so cute, and they looked exactly alike! They basically stole the show from us. :)

My first-ever wedding participation was as a flower girl for my aunt's second wedding. I can't remember much then, only that that aisle I walked on was the longest walk I did in my life hahahah!
