For men, one of the most formal, if not traditional, articles of clothing you can spot at many weddings is the tie. Ties make even the least formal guests look elegant. Ties bring us back into classical times, as they are a remnant of the period when men’s clothing was much more expressive.

The modern tie actually descended from a classical necktie called the cravat. The cravat originated in the 1600’s, a time when men were as fashionable and colorful as the women. Believe it or not, however, the cravat was of military origin. The cravat came from the traditional attire of the Croatian military, whose service was enlisted by the then-king of France, Louis XIII. In fact, the word “cravat” came from the French “cravat,” a French mispronunciation of “Croat.”

Though military in origin, the cravat is the epitome of class and culture in classical fashion, and is still worn today, especially at very formal occasions. Cravats are often worn with a wing collar shirt, though normal shirts are also acceptable today.
