Nothing beats the bow tie as the neckwear to wear to weddings and other formal occasions. Bow ties are elegant and practical at the same time. They don’t scream for attention, but they contribute to your overall appearance. If you want to play it safe at these formal occasions, wearing a bow tie is a very good option.

Wearing a bow tie, however, is tricky business. Wear your bow tie right by following these seven easy steps:

Steps on how to tie a bow tie

  • Put the bow tie around your shirt collar. Place the bow tie in such a way that the left end of the tie is longer than the right end.
  • Cross the left (longer) end over the right (shorter) end.
  • Bring the right end up and under the loop made between the bow tie and the shirt collar.
  • Double the left end over itself to make a loop. This is the tie’s front base loop.
  • Circle the right end over the middle of the front base loop.
  • Double the left end back on itself. Poke it through the loop down the tie. Be sure to hold the tie in place while doing this.
  • Straighten the center knot and tug the ends to adjust your tie.

Hey I appreciate the step-by-step instruction but is it possible to replace the little picture with something that is bigger? I am more of a visual person, and it will really help people like me a lot.

Much as how it shames me to admit, I never really learned how to tie a bow tie. On my wedding day, I just used that clip on one they sell. Guys, don't follow what I did. Learn how to tie this thing!
