At weddings, ties add formality and elegance to every man’s attire, especially the groom’s. It is a definite must-have for every groom to wear a necktie, bow tie or cravat to accompany their tuxedos. There are many types of ties you can use to accentuate a groom’s wardrobe. While neckties and bow ties are the ones most commonly worn, there are other types of ties that you can use, depending on the theme of the wedding.

One of the less-common types of formal ties is the ascot. Ascot ties evolved from the traditional cravat, which was fashionable during the 19th Century. It is a neckband with wide, peaked wings. Ascot ties are usually manufactured with gray silk. This type of tie is typically designed with patterns, foiled over, and attached with a tie tack or stick pin.

Ascot ties are usually worn to weddings that have a very formal theme, usually in daytime. Ascot ties are best worn with striped gray trousers and a cutaway coat.

There are two methods of tying the ascot tie: the Dry Cravat method and the Dress cravat method. The Dry Cravat method employs a simpler knot, with the ascot placed outside or inside the shirt. The Dress Cravat is more complex, and is used with a tie pin or tie tack.
