A Hand to Hold: Finding the Perfect Formal Gloves

Happy Groom and Bride
Happy wedding
You’ve popped the question, and she said “yes,” so now what? Since your blushing bride-to-be might have taken the ultimate responsibility of communicating with the wedding planner and making sure your whole wedding ceremony runs smoothly, the very least that you can do is to show up looking and feeling like a million dollars.

If you’re planning on having an ultra-formal wedding, then there’s just no way around it: you have to wear the dreaded tuxedo. Most grooms are afraid of looking like a doddering penguin when dressed in such formal garments. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be the dashing and debonair Cary Grant to pull off the wedding tuxedo. All you really need is a well fitted tuxedo suitable for the event and the right accessories to complete your overall look.

Gloves are always an excellent tuxedo accessory for ultra-formal weddings. Read on to find out more about how to purchase the perfect gloves for your wedding tuxedo.

The Gloves

Gloves are mostly worn to protect the wearer’s hands from extreme heat or cold, friction and harmful chemicals. Formal gloves also add panache and style to an otherwise bland and boring outfit.

You will find a great number of glove types, styles, colors and designs on the market. Fingerless gloves, also known as gauntlets, refer to gloves with a single opening as opposed to separate sheaths for each finger. Mittens on the other hand, are gloves that are designed to cover the whole hand but are lacking individual openings for the fingers.

Men’s gloves can be fashioned from various materials, like wool, cotton, leather, nylon, knitted fabrics, rubber, latex and even kevlar. Since you’re heading to a formal event, pick wool, cotton, poly-cotton blend or nylon gloves for an irresistibly suave and sophisticated appearance. If you want gloves that fit your fingers perfectly, we suggest you go for nylon stretch-fit formal gloves over your other alternatives.

Gloves also come in different colors, running the gamut from plain white to basic black and all the possible colors in between. The key to looking great in a tuxedo is color coordination. Although white may seem like an excellent option, unless you want to look like a magician we suggest you skip white in favor of either gray or black.

Choosing Your Formal Gloves

Tip 1: Stick to your budget.

Weddings are usually incredibly expensive and extravagant affairs. Don’t spend too much money on items you can scrimp on. If you have a set budget, learn to follow it.

Tip 2: Your choice of glove-color should be based on the time of your wedding and the color of your tux.

If you’re having a formal day wedding, then wear gray gloves with your morning suit. For formal evening weddings, if you’re wearing a black tailcoat, you can make this the exception and don white or black gloves for the occasion.

For semi-formal day weddings, pick gray gloves to go with your semi-formal wedding attire. You can also forgo the gloves in favor of the natural look for a black tie affair.

Tip 3: Try on your chosen gloves in different fabrics to find the most comfortable pair.

Consider wool, cashmere or nylon stretch formal gloves.

Tip 4: Make sure you buy the right size.

Try on your gloves before making your purchase. You need gloves that provide a snug fit and enough room for you to wiggle, move or bend your fingers.

Shop smart and buy formal gloves that are both fashionable and practical.

I agree with my fellow commenter. I want to physically be able to touch my bride's skin during the wedding. It makes it that much more intimate and personal IMO.

I dunno, a glove on a wedding might look good on women, but for the groom? It shouts too much of royalty wannabe, in my opinion. I still think that having no gloves complements a tux more.
